My commission process starts with an initial consultation; there we can discuss exactly what you envision and make decisions together on size and composition.
I work from photos that I will take in my studio during a two hour photo shoot. This will be scheduled and discussed in consultation.*
My process largely consists of 3 stages: the underpainting, the main stage and the glazing.
Initially I compose a full sized, charcoal sketch of the piece. When you have approved of the sketch, I will start painting. The main stage is by far my favourite in which I build impasto on the lighter areas whilst keeping the shadows smooth, giving great depth and texture to the subject. Glazes are very thin, transparent layers of paint that add depth to the shadows and can add a slight hint of colour. Finally, when the painting is dry, it is varnished and ready for you to enjoy. This multi-staged process grants me the space to truly consider the smallest nuances of colour, texture and detail where each layer allows you to see the one before; giving it the depth of real skin.
Portraits are typically painted life size or slightly under; the minimum for head and neck is 9”x12” (A4). Commissions start at £650 + shipping. I take one third of the price as deposit after consultation, the second third after initial drawing and the final third upon delivery.
*(Under certain circumstances, it is possible to commission a portrait from suitable pre-existing photographs, enquiries welcome).
